... which I actually read before reviewing it.I usually don't choose my book for kindle first until a number of people have read and reviewed the selections. I use the reviews to get a better idea if I will like the book. This month, I found myself with nothing to read early in the month. I had narrowed my choice down to two books and turned to the reviews. Out of the reviews left for Bone Music, I think only one person had actually completed the novel, but everyone left a rating. I decided that I would choose this book so real reviews would help future readers.I enjoyed this book, it's a bit of a thriller and science fiction rolled into one. I felt that most of the characters were well fleshed out and believable. The action was well paced and the science fiction (advanced drugs and technology) were within the realm of possibility allowing for suspension of disbelief necessary in science fiction. The story was interesting and absorbing and never seemed to drag. A couple of the characters and some circumstances in the book were a bit too contrived but on the whole I really enjoyed my time with these characters and this story. I'm interested in how the story progresses and will read the second book when it comes out.
This book caught my attention from the beginning. It introduced a paranoid, insecure woman who was raised by serial killers, vainly attempting to get her life in order. She just wanted to be "normal"--even while unfairly suffering the cruel "Burning Girl" label. Unfortunately, she was baring her soul to a person who was pretending to help, but actually had his own agenda. This book gives a look at serial killers at both ends of the spectrum--those that kill simply because they want to, those who kill because of some intended slight or offense, and those that kill because they do it for what they believe is the benefit of humanity.Through it all, this victim of circumstance is tricked and taken advantage of, to the point where she decides "If they're gonna make me do this, whoever they are, I'm doing it on my own terms". At that turning point, the Prey becomes the Hunter.Yes, there are things in this story that are a bit of a reach, but then there are also some actions taken by both law enforcement and drug corporations that seem very believable. Although the Heroine could have been a bit more personable, she was interesting. I also found the supporting characters to be appealing. The plotline had some interesting developments. The writing style was good, giving the story a smooth flow. And at no point was I even remotely considering putting aside the book for anything less than a very good reason. I was intrigued until the end; and there was a reasonable end. It satisfied, yet left things planned out for upcoming books. I'm pleased enough with this book to continue with the next in the series. Not for a young reader due to language and violence. No explicit sexual situations.
I picked this book up on a whim. Its praises and the blurb had me wanting to read it. I did shy away for a while though. I am not a sci-fi reader. They tend to not hold my attention. I like things to be a little more real in books.I was hooked from the start of this book. I had no clue where it was going to take me. The blurb definitely did not give me a clue of what I was in store for. I was glad that the sci-fi part wasn't such a overdone thing in this book, that is for sure. The premise of this book isn't so cut and dry. It starts out as one thing, then turns to another. The change in the plot is so gradual, you don't even realize the author has completely shifted your focus to the real issue at hand. I fell for every last character in this book, even when I shouldn't have. The character building, along with the plot building, in this writing is so phenomenal, I felt like I was in the book, experiencing everything the characters were. I just couldn't stop reading. There were a few lulls in the book. There were a few parts that felt unnecessary, but didn't really slow down the process of the book. They could have been left out, and nothing about the book would have changed.Overall, this book had me on the edge of my seat, rooting for the good guys; whoever that might have been. (The lines tended to blur from time to time.) I am definitely anticipating the next book in this series when it releases.
It’s been ages since I’ve read a 450 page book in three days. And I would have read Christopher Rice’s Bone Music much quicker if eye fatigue and life hadn’t gotten in the way. Rice, one of my favorite authors, has created a compelling tale, that of Charlotte Rowe, a young woman coping with the fact that the first seven years of her life were spent with serial killers. Charlotte is trying desperately to put her life back together in her adulthood when she becomes manipulated. And that manipulation borders on science fiction. But Rice is such a masterful storyteller that we believe that bit of science fiction. It’s not as if we, as readers, simply accept that such a thing can happen, it is that we believe such a thing is possible and will indeed happen, if not now, then in the future. And that premise propels this very human story into a fast-moving almost “coming of age†story, a love story, a suspense story, a thriller. And that is Rice’s gift: he can weave all those elements into a magnificent book. And not only that, a book that appears to be the first of series. I’m not a huge fan of series books—my anal retentive personality makes me feel obligated to continue reading each book, if only to find out what’s next for the protagonist. But I eagerly look forward to installment two of The Burning Girl mysteries. I close with this: in a book fraught with suspense of the dangerous kind, Rice fills a first kiss with so much tender suspense that I melted. His description of that kiss is one of the most lovely I’ve ever read.
