Mackenzie L. Havey has presented an esoteric, potentially "fluffy" concept in a super-approachable format that anchors philosophy and anecdotes with thoughtful science. Havey is a talented writer, and Mindful Running is a quick read that is still surprisingly comprehensive in its depth and breadth on the subject of meditative running. As a serious-but-not-elite runner and someone who is intrigued by meditation but has never successfully done it, I found Havey's work to be encouraging and inspiring. This book is suitable for those new to meditation as well as those looking to deepen their practice and/or tie it into their exercise regimen. (But in case my words don't carry much weight, consider this: When uber-runner Dean Karnazes—who is quoted on the cover—thinks you're onto something, you're probably onto something.)
I had a hard time with this book. This review is more to the author than prospective readers. There is a great deal of information and it comes from an author with much experience that could benefit readers. But, the story becomes lost in the detail.I practice a form of mindfulness in my training and running. Long ago I set aside the music and every training session or race has a purpose. There are many examples here that explain the benefits. I purchased the book to learn, and gain inspiration from the experiences of accomplish athletes. There are elements of both in this book, but there is so much left undeveloped by the author that the book became tedious as I progressed through the book.I think that this book could benefit the novice runner. I hope that the author will continue with a subsequent offering that will focus on experienced athletes.
The author does a great job introducing the reader to the practice of mindfulness and how to apply it to your running. I like the section on True North Goals, pursuing that things that are most deeply important to you and the encouragement to pursue them in a process oriented manner, rather than go after the quick fix. I personally feel that most running injuries are a result of being in such a hurry to accomplish that we don't listen to our own moment by moment self awareness. Havey quotes from Elinor Fish "I often see runners who are so outcome focused that they start a training plan and don't pay attention to how their body is responding to that training" (pg 60). But Havey introduces the subject fairly comprehensively and I have no doubt that anyone seeking to introduce more mindfulness into their running will be changed in a positive a way if they work through all the material in the book. If their is one thing we really need more of in the world today, it is self awareness and books like this one that point the way
This was an engaging, well-written look at the science underlying mindfulness and physical activity and how the two tie together--combined with a simple but substantive guide to making the link work to your advantage. As a runner who struggles with staying in the present moment, I know I'll be turning back to Mackenzie's tips and strategies for years to come.
Mackenzie presents mindfulness in a matter of fact way, clearly articulating info, knowledge, research and results. Everyone from runners, to yogi’s, to people of the corporate world and beyond, can relate and apply her lessons in “focusing, fathoming and flowing†to not only their running practice, but also to their everyday lives to be more mindful, grateful, calm and happy.
This is an interesting book about a subject I am passionate about. I found myself a bit ahead of the game, but this is an excellent book for the beginner or the less-experienced runner. I look forward to more from this author.
This book has changed the way I think when jogging. I often read some of it before hitting the trail. Good book.
Not the first book I've read on the topic, but I did like it. I'm not a huge fan of the author's writing style, but I did like information, and I feel the book is well researched. I didn't like at all on page 168 where she wrote "Even if you want to try conventional meditation, many of us just flat-out don't have the time." Gasp! That's complete nonsense. Consider the average adult spends three hours per day on their phone and another 2-3 hours per day watching television, I would say that everyone has the time to meditate (even if only for 10 minutes per day). It's all about prioritizing and using time wisely. And like Zen proverb goes: “You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes every day — unless you’re too busy. Then you should sit for an hour.†Her statement just gave everyone a pass on meditation, rather than encouraging them to set aside a few minutes per day to do it (which brings many benefits). Overall a good book and worth reading.
