I just recently ordered a copy of this book. In reality I wanted to order the Updated version which is even better. Nonetheless, this is also a great version. This book is so informative. I have had the privilege of looking at the updated version in Barnes and Nobles. This book is packed with lots and lots of information when it's comes to Documentary Filmmaking, especially for the someone who is a beginner. Very helpful. The Author is very knowledgeable and gives a lot of tips and information to assist one in shooting their Documentary.I would advise anyone purchasing this book to get it. Better yet, get the updated copy because it has a whole lot more info and is updated to include today's Camera's (DSLR's) that are being used to make Documentary's along with Camcorders. I have recommended this book to just about everyone. I have a lot of books on making Documentary's but this is bar far the Best and Easiest to follow Guide there is out there. Number # 1 in my Book.

I have to say, this book answered every question I had floating around in my head, and also answered ones I haven't even yet conceived! Although, like the author said, you'll still need a few other types of books to add to your personal collection, I think this book will help you get started on the right foot without having to wait 4 years studying before even hitting the record button. This is perfect for people who love visuals on hand, yet do not feel like running to a TV or computer to watch a how-to video. I've only read one documentary filmmaking book at the library prior to this one, so I'm not Siskel & Ebert on the whole matter, but this book will further excite you to want to get into filmmaking.The book even has a section on potential cameras you should start with and a quick breakdown of each. Mind you, I was researching cameras for about a week before I settled on 2, and lo and behold, I was lucky that they were on the list of 10 or so cameras. Had I had the book prior to buying anything (I'm thinking I'm gonna have to return my cheap tripod now) I would have known already what to look for in video equipment.Easy to understand with plenty of practical, just-get-it-done-dude, encouragement and motivation. For those of you in the 90% born with a limited cash flow, the author understands where you're coming from.Down and dirty, and purchase worthy.

This is an okay book. Not great in depth but clear and concise.My biggest problem is that I bought the Kindle version, which is supposed to give you access to the content that is on the DVD on line. Well, I've never been able to get this to work, and without this extra content, the book is only worth half the price.First, I was told to send confirmation of my purchase to Academic e-books, who then sent me toTaylor & Francis. I then created and activated an account at T &F. I appeared to be logged in fine, it showed me the name of the book and the number of files available to me. But I was never able to download the files. I kept getting a "server not responding" message. An email to Taylor & Francis has gone unanswered.I emailed back to the Academic e-books support person who had directed me to create my account with Taylor & Francis. At least he replied. However, it was only to say "I've been trying to sort this out for you with our development team. There's not much more I can do at the moment I'm afraid. Please wait for any further update,"That was on Aug. 21, 2013. It is Sept. 11, 2013 and I have had no "further update" and still can't get the files.So if you want to get what you think you're paying for - don't buy the Kindle version - because you will be severely shortchanged. The only reason I was willing to pay such a price for such a small book was because of all my supposed "extras".

This book predates the rise of DSLR filmaking. As such a lot of the info around the actual filming process could be updated. The "only" way to focus, as discussed in this book, is actually the wrong way to focus your DSLR camera. This guide predates the ubiquity of of solid state media, and discusses outdated media like tapes and connectivity like firewire. Because equipment is constantly getting cheaper and more sophisticated, the barrier to entry is even considerably lower than when this book was publishedDiscussing specific technologies will always run the risk of being overtaken by innovations, The guide really shines when considering techniques and strategies, and when sharing hard-won experiences that will help newbies from repeating the same mistakes - the kind of things you can't learn by watching a couple of how-to videos on Youtube. And this is where I found the value. Learning your tools is simply a matter of time,patience and application. Learning to make compelling, entertaining and thought-provoking documentaries requires something else again,and this is the 101 introduction.

The book is rugged enough to be stuffed into a camera bag for a quick reference. Personally, I have a hard time remembering terms and numerology. I know this book will have me covered.After reading this book, I believe a person should know all they need to know to get started with their first film, as well as save themselves from making serious mistakes.
