I bought this book for my French Civilization class at my local community college back in Fall 2012. I really enjoyed this well written book. It is has a ton of information on French history. And speaking on how well this book was written, it can make ANYBODY an expert on the history of France.The book arrived on time and I would like to thank Amazon.com seller booksco_wa for their service and helping me to get a B grade in the above mentioned French Civilization class.

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Seven Ages of Paris" written by the same author so I purchased this book also. I found this book just as informative and easy to read. I've read many French history books, and I found that this one gave me the best understanding of the situation in France during WWII (occupied vs. unoccupied France). I would definitely recommend it if you are interested in history/French history.

Very engaging writing style by the author. Not too much commentary, just the facts that are important to the understanding of how France has been shaped over time and its special relationship to England. The best book for first time travelers to France or those who have traveled to Europe and scratch their head wondering why there is such an "on again off again" relationship between the two countries andy why France came to the rescue of fledgling America during the American Revolution. Best of all it is in electronic form!

Disappointed again. (You'd think I'd have learned after reading Horne's The Seven Ages of Paris, but needing a good overview of French history I held my breath & bought it.) But yet again, Horne's style is too flip, breezy, more about being "clever" than enlightening. Plus I found two errors in the first 8 pages. Not that they were major but if these details are wrong, what else is wrong?

The history of France is one of the longer stories in Western Civilization that can be traced to the times of the Romans to the present day. Along the way were many events that would affect European and world history at large such as the Revolution and the rule of Napoleon. This book is a general history of France.The book covers the history of France chronologically starting with the Franks and ending with the presidency of François Mitterrand. Most of the major events of the country's history get extra coverage including Louis VIX, the Revolution, Napoleon, the world wars, and so on. The author did not attempt to create an extremely scholarly book so the reading does not come off as dense or difficult.However, there are some issues with this book that really inhibit it from being a beginner's book that I believe it was intended to be. Far more times that I could count, the author makes allusions to events in France's future such as how such-and-such situation is similar to how France would find itself in during World War II or under Napoleon. These comparisons to future events make it difficult for the reader to comprehend if they do not already have some knowledge of French or European history. Plus, it just comes off as a bad way to write history. Too many parts of the book lack essential context. The chapter covering World War I, for example, makes no attempt to explain what caused the war or why France was involved. Without that knowledge, the reader could be left confused about why the war happened at all.Overall, this book was a problematic read. While there is some good information about some major events and players in French history, the casual reader will likely have difficulty reading it if they do not already have some background knowledge of French or European history.

I liked the writing style and the idea that I could own one book that has all of french history facts in one place. However, the early comments about Charlemagne's contribution to France puzzled me. The author qualifies him as "an absentee ruler who did little for France". I was born and educated in France and that qualification is at odds with what we were taught. We are taught that he was the 'father of Europe' and did a lot to institutionalize the role of education in our culture, among many other things.So, I'll keep the book around for reference but not sure I'll continue reading it as I originally intended.
